A German (39) probably had several guardian angels in St. Leonhard in the Tyrolean Pitztal on Thursday. The mountaineer slipped in the snow and fell 150 meters down a slope. He survived the crash without injuries.
The 39-year-old went on a tour of the Watzespitze with three colleagues. According to the police, the quartet had to pass a steep glacier step during the descent around 6 p.m.
“When the German was the first to climb the steep step, he slipped with his crampons on the soft snow after a few meters and then fell about 100 to 150 meters over the edge,” police said.
The fall was stopped with an ice axe
The 39-year-old managed to break his fall with the ice axe. Because his comrades could no longer see him, they called the emergency call.
Miraculously, the man survived the crash ‘completely unscathed’. He was rescued by the rescue helicopter with the rope and flown to the Kaunergrathütte together with his companions.
