In Russia, a Russian Sukhoi Superjet plane crashed near the capital Moscow. All three crew members were killed.
The plane had taken off for a test flight from Zhukovka Airport outside the capital, as announced by the Civil Defense Service. It crashed near the city of Kolomna, about 80 kilometers southeast of Moscow. There were no passengers on board.
Until the war in Ukraine began, the Russian aerospace industry was largely dependent on aircraft and parts from Western manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. As a result of Western sanctions, there is now often a shortage of spare parts – the consequences are sometimes fatal.
The accident happened after repairs
State-owned manufacturer United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) said the Gazprom airline Gazpromavia plane made a test flight after repairs. UAC is doing everything it can to produce the Sukhoi Superjet without foreign components in the future. According to the Swiss aviation information service ch-aviation, the engine was the SaM146 model of Franco-Russian production. No information has yet been given about the cause.
Controversial ‘Superjet’
The twin-engine regional jet Sukhoi Superjet SSJ 100 was one of the first new developments in Russian aircraft construction after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the machine is considered to be prone to failures. Since the introduction of this type of aircraft in 2008, three planes have crashed. In 2019, a Superjet caught fire during an emergency landing at the capital’s Sheremetyevo airport. 41 of the 78 people on board were killed.
