Floriani frogmen – tragedy of the accident required diving service from the fire department

Date:

It is considered by comrades to be the toughest training in the fire brigade – and yet many Florianis enroll year after year in diving training. Tragedies like the one in Oberwaltersdorf make clear the importance of this special fighting force.

As they approach, the hat is on fire. And this despite the fact that the missions take place underwater. Fire brigade divers are usually responsible for recovering vehicles or war relics.

“Of course, unfortunately, it also happens that we have to retrieve corpses from the depths of the water,” a comrade tells “Krone”.

Tragedy of Oberwaltersdorf
This unfortunately only became clear again on Wednesday, when the emergency services in Oberwaltersdorf had to rescue a sewer worker who had been pushed into the pipe by a flood wave. It is not without reason that diving service is considered the most difficult and demanding training. It is not unusual for people to train in the Mostviertel with the army pioneers from Melk.

A tough test worth taking
It wasn’t until June that new “frogmen” completed their training in Lunz am See – and of course also in the lake. “After the theoretical test, the current swim took place in the Erlauf near Purgstall,” says Peter Kaufmann from Greinsfurth, commander of the West Diving Service. From mid-2025, interested firefighters can register for his diving platoon and a new course will start in 2026.
