Thousands of people took to the streets of Albania’s capital Tirana on Thursday to protest against Prime Minister Edi Rama. Opponents of the government accuse Rama of corruption and are calling for his resignation. Angry protesters threw firebombs at the Albanian government building and the office of a mayor from Rama’s Socialist Party. The fires have been extinguished and there are currently no reports of injuries.
The government’s opponents are calling for the release of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, the opposition leader who is under house arrest on suspicion of corruption.
“Political arrest without facts”
“Albania is the only country in Europe where the opposition leader is under political arrest without any facts or evidence,” Berisha said via video link. “Edi Rama wants an Albania without Albanians, without opposition and without justice.”
Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to formally file charges against Berisha. Berisha denies all allegations and accuses Rama of taking revenge to silence opponents. Rama, for his part, has denied the charges.
Call for protest
Berisha had called on his supporters to engage in civil disobedience to force the government to hold new elections. Edi Rama has been in power since 2013 and has won every parliamentary and local election since then.
