The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called South Korea “scum” over the recent balloon-dropping campaigns and threatened Seoul with retaliation. Kim Yo Jong was quoted by North Korea’s KCNA news agency on Sunday as saying she had been told the latest batch of “dirty leaflets” had been found on North Korean territory along the border.
Despite repeated warnings, South Korea will not stop “playing this rough and dirty game,” Kim Yo Jong said. Seoul must be prepared to “pay a very high price.” The North Korean military will now “conduct a comprehensive search, throw the found garbage into the fire and take it away.”
Flyers sent with balloons
In recent weeks, South Korea has stepped up its response to hundreds of trash-filled balloons sent over the border by Pyongyang, including cigarette butts, plastic, animal feces and toilet paper. South Korean activists then sent balloons containing leaflets and USB sticks over the border into the neighboring country.
As tensions rose, South Korea suspended a 2018 military accord with North Korea. The agreement aims to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula and prevent unintended escalation, particularly along the heavily fortified border. The Seoul government also resumed propaganda broadcasts over loudspeakers along the border.
Relationship at rock bottom
Relations between North and South Korea are currently at a low point. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced that he would expand the development of weapons, including tactical nuclear weapons. In response, South Korea and the United States have increased their defense cooperation.
