Dirt, stench, vermin, cages full of excrement: the official veterinarian saw a horror scene at a breeder near Graz. “Purzel & Vicky” jumped in right away.
Ingrid and Michael Stracke, animal rights activists from Styria, have unfortunately seen many horror scenarios – but something like this scares them endlessly: “The official veterinarian went to a small animal breeder near Graz,” the couple said. He reportedly found terrible conditions: “Dirt, vermin, waste everywhere. Some cages were so high up with excrement that the animals bumped into the bars at the top.”
Further: “Some chickens couldn’t walk at all because they had to live hunched over or sitting in the cage. In between, garbage, rotten eggs and carcasses everywhere!” The smell: unbearable. According to Strackes, many of the nearly 150 rabbits, 30 ducks, 350 chickens and five pigeons were left to vegetate. Some in solitary confinement or mini-cages. Young animals were reared in plastic boxes – there were said to be 25 chickens in one (!) wooden box.
The official veterinarian responded immediately with the acceptance. Half of the rabbits were housed in the Graz State Animal Shelter, all the others with “Purzel and Vicky” in Vasoldsberg, “they are now cared for and cared for in a species-appropriate environment”.
“Purzel & Vicky” consistently does excellent animal welfare work for hundreds of protégés, from ducks to pigs and donkeys. If you would like to support: account number AT 393843900000257410
