Residents of the Waldviertler town of Drosendorf in Lower Austria experienced scenes that one would expect to see in the Wild West. A witness describes her experiences surrounding an explosion just before 4 a.m. After the explosion, several shots were fired, followed by a cinematic escape…
The Raiffeisenbank Drosendorf building in the Waldviertel was badly damaged. An ATM inside was blown up and the explosion also severely damaged the building. Wild West-like scenes played out at 4 a.m. Sunday in the small Lower Austrian town near the Czech border. At least four perpetrators wanted to blow up the ATMs of two bank branches that were less than 60 meters apart, ‘the Kroon’ reported.
Two groups of perpetrators
At the same time, the perpetrators went to work in the two buildings. But while the perpetrators were interrupted by a passer-by at the Sparkasse, their accomplices set fire to the Raiffeisenkasse. “It was awesome,” is how locals describe a sound that sounded like a high-speed collision between two cars.
Witness could see car
The noise also woke a witness who saw a relatively flat car – probably a sports car – at the crime scene. Because it was still too dark, she could not determine the color of the car with certainty. Then fear seized her limbs: ‘Suddenly I heard shots and quickly took cover’, she recalls anxiously of several shots that rang out throughout the night. Shortly afterwards she heard the perpetrators’ getaway car roar away ‘like a rocket’.
Neighbors shot at the ATM bombers
The state police headquarters confirmed that several shots were fired (see photos of some of the bullet holes above). What happened? After the ATM was blown up, a resident pointed a gun at the criminals and shot them “back.” He pulled the trigger several times and the perpetrators fled without taking anything. The crime scene team was able to identify several bullet holes.
“It is unlikely that the perpetrators returned fire,” police said. The criminals then immediately got into the getaway car and drove away. An alarm search has so far been unsuccessful. It is believed that the gang crossed the nearby border into the Czech Republic.
