Clashes between thousands of fans in Colombia

The defeat of Colombia 1-0 against Argentina in the final of the Copa América caused riots this Sunday night in several areas of Bogotá and neighboring municipalities where thousands of people gathered to watch the match.

One of the outbreaks of violence took place in the Parque de la 93, where a crowd had gathered to watch the game on giant screens, but after the loss fights broke out between some of the attendees and the Police.

Before the game even started there was a fight between the attendees as more people came than expected, which added to the consumption of alcohol, resulted in fights and arguments.

There were also clashes in the central square of Soacha, a municipality south of Bogotá, which forced the intervention of the Police and some people reported on social networks violence and excessive force on the part of uniformed officers trying to control drunks.

To prevent an outbreak of party violence, authorities in Bogotá and other Colombian cities strengthened their police force on Sunday and launched operations to control alcohol consumption.

The mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, reported that, to ensure security, surveillance in the city has been strengthened by 2,500 police officers.

“The call is for respect so that we can enjoy this celebration in peace, with tolerance, that we can enjoy it and not have things to regret. This is a great responsibility for everyone,” said Galán on Sunday of morning
