The former US president landed in Milwaukee on Sunday and is preparing to participate in the event that will crown him the Republican candidate for the White House on Thursday.
The Republican National Convention starts this Monday in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) with special security measures following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign event for the November presidential election.
The convention, which runs through Thursday, will crown Trump as the nominee. The event will feature enhanced security measuresfollowing the executive order of US President Joe Biden. The Democratic leader announced yesterday that he had asked Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to review “all security measures for the Republican National Convention.” Moreover, Trump already receives a high level of security, even though he is not yet a candidate.
The city centre has already been armoured, several streets have been blocked and dozens of security guards are patrolling the areas around the convention centre.
According to the city’s mayor’s office, Milwaukee police, fire and emergency services are working “closely” with the Secret Service “to keep residents, businesses and visitors safe.”
A senior federal government official assured ABC News that, as a result of what happened, this is the case re-examine safety plans before the convention and afterward, it will be determined whether changes are needed. Another source told CBS News that they are evaluating whether to expand the security perimeter and install more buffer zones near the convention center to control traffic.
Trump is already in Milwaukee
Trump will deliver the traditional speech Thursday publicly accepting his nomination as the Republican presidential nominee. He is also expected to reveal his vice presidential nominee this week.
The former US president landed in the northeastern US city yesterday, Sunday. “I landed in Milwaukee with Donald Trump,” announced one of his sons, Eric Trump, in a short message published on the private social network Trump Force One.
Trump arrives at the best moment of the election campaign, as the lead he maintained in the polls over President Joe Biden increased after the debate at the end of the month, now he sees how his number has acquired a heroic dimension in the eyes of his supporters after he survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania this weekend.
The attack, which left Trump slightly injured in his right ear after the bullet struck the ear, resulted in the death of one supporter and two other injuries, who were hospitalized.
The attacker, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot dead seconds later by a Secret Service sniper on the roof from which he fired the shots.
