In Italy, people are currently preparing for the hottest week of the year. In the south of the country, temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius are predicted for the coming days. In Rome, but also in Bologna and Florence, red alert was declared.
Tourists lined up at Rome’s numerous historic fountains to refresh themselves with water. Cafes and restaurants relied on mist from fans to keep their guests happy. Both demand for air conditioning and ice cream consumption have increased in the popular holiday destination. Consumer protection groups complained that the price of ice cream had risen by 30 percent in just three years.
93 percent go on holiday in their own country
On Saturday, Italian holidaymakers turned their backs on the cities. There was heavy traffic on the highways this morning. Over the weekend, for example, many day tourists headed for the sea or the mountains. Hoteliers’ association Federalberghi estimates that 93 percent of the Italian population will go on holiday in their own country this summer.
The south in particular is currently suffering from the heat. According to meteorologists, temperatures of up to 40 degrees are predicted for the coming days. This is due to an African high-pressure area called ‘Caronte’ – named after Charon, the ferryman from Greek mythology.
