Slovakia restricts freedom of assembly after Fico assassination

Date:

After the assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico, freedom of assembly in Slovakia is now being restricted. The opposition warns of the creation of a ‘police state’.

The so-called “Lex assassination” was adopted in late June in response to the gun attack on the left-wing populist head of government two months ago. There is now a prohibition mile within a radius of 50 meters around the government and presidential headquarters, parliament and all courthouses.

Demonstrations against politicians in front of their homes are also prohibited. Gatherings can also be banned if they endanger public order.

Right to personal protection extended
Opposition critics warned that the law was a step toward a “police state.” The package of measures also stipulates that the leaders of parties represented in parliament are entitled to personal protection, as are the prosecutor and the president of the Constitutional Court. Government leaders who have served for more than 10 years in office are entitled to a lifelong pension. So far, this has only applied to Fico himself.
