A Ukrainian deserter was shot dead Sunday night near the Moldovan border. He was stopped in a car with three other men at a checkpoint and then fled, the Ukrainian border guard said.
However, he and another man who had also fled were rediscovered. According to their own statements, the Ukrainian border guard fired a warning shot. After the man resisted, a second direct shot was fired, which cost him his life. According to the investigation, the group fled by taxi from a training site in the Odessa region and was heading to the Transnistria region of Moldova, which is controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
Not only volunteers in the army
At the end of June, a civilian conscript died after being shot along with another at the Romanian border. They allegedly attacked the border guards with a machete. According to the spokesman for the authority, the use of firearms is a recurring phenomenon. The state consistently takes action against deserters (see video above).
In Ukraine, martial law has been in effect since the war began in February 2022. Only in exceptional cases can men between the ages of 18 and 60 leave the country. Since there are not enough volunteers, the army also relies on forced conscripts. Conscripts therefore repeatedly try to avoid military service by fleeing to neighboring EU countries or to Moldova. Fences with barbed wire have already been erected on the western borders.
