Last December, a 34-year-old ran miles away from police, regardless of casualties. Not only did he knock over a cyclist and ram a car carrying a family of four head-on, he also hit the gas pedal despite the roadblock and raced toward two police officers. The Public Prosecution Service is charging him with attempted murder on two occasions.
On December 8, a 34-year-old left a trail of destruction through half of Vienna. When police tried to stop him at the Westbahnhof traffic circle, he simply ran away from the officers. Why? “Because I didn’t have a driver’s license, I was in Austria illegally, I had a joint in my hand, and the car had fake license plates,” the suspect said. So he stepped on the gas in his black Jaguar—regardless of the losses.
Rushed through a roadblock
“The defendant changed lanes repeatedly, drove recklessly and nearly caused several accidents on the Vienna Belt,” the prosecutor said, summarizing what she described as a “rampage.” Police eventually set up a roadblock at the intersection of the Vienna Belt and Eichenstrasse to end the wild chase. “But he showed no decency to stop,” the prosecutor said.
At a speed of 70 to 80 km/h he sped towards two officers who stood in his way with drawn service weapons. At the last moment they were able to jump aside – an attempted murder, the Public Prosecution Service charges. The Serbian defends himself: “I was just sure that the police would take my side. That’s common sense. There was also so much time that if I had pressed the brakes, I could have stopped.”
Cyclists shot down
But the killing spree doesn’t stop there: the 34-year-old continues to drive over the tire at high speed. Until he hits a cyclist on Matzleinsdorferplatz in the 5th district. “He suffered a mild traumatic brain injury, just because he was wearing a helmet,” the prosecutor explains. According to her, worse could have happened to the man.
“A… and criminal”
At Fasangasse, the speeder finally collided with oncoming traffic – a car in which a family of four was sitting. The prosecutor: “Only this accident marks the end of the extremely dangerous, reckless killing spree of the suspect.” The mother, who was in the car, was seriously injured. The rest of the family escaped with ease.
Endangering physical safety, coercion, bodily harm through negligence, attempted bodily harm and attempted murder – the list of charged crimes is long. “There is no doubt that he is a… and a criminal,” admits defense attorney Rudolf Mayer, who is defending the 34-year-old together with Lukas Hruby. However, he is not a murderer and never had the intention to kill. This will be clarified by various witness statements on another trial date.
Not the first frenzy
The wild chase through Vienna was apparently not a first for the Serb. In March 2019, a similar incident took place in Brno, Czech Republic. With a kilo of cannabis, three pistols and a Kalashnikov in his luggage, he raced through the city, ahead of the police – just like in December 2023. For this, he served a seven-year prison sentence, and was released halfway through for good behavior and a residence. ban.
