New measures – Asylum seekers: Mandatory activities expanded

Date:

The regulation that expands the charitable activities for asylum seekers in federal care will come into force on Tuesday. As part of the presentation of the new measures by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), an initial assessment of the mandatory basic rules courses was also followed.

Since the beginning of June, 1,653 refugees have completed this and no fines need to be imposed, Karner said at a press conference on Monday. The head of the Federal Health Agency, Andreas Achrainer, welcomed the mandatory nature, as it had previously happened that heads of households had prevented women from participating.

According to Achrainer, a total of five curricula have been developed in which the newly arrived asylum seekers are taught. They are about culture and etiquette, democracy, rights and duties, equality and saying no to anti-Semitism. The fact that all refugees participated voluntarily shows the BBU leader that they are hungry for knowledge. In short: “You can only respect what you know.”

Work or less pocket money
Achrainer is also pleased that the regulation that regulates the expansion of the areas of work in the federal care institutions will come into effect on Tuesday. This means that deployment is now also possible in units under local authority and in organizations where at least five civil servants can work. Areas of work include nursing homes, libraries or the volunteer fire department, as Karner explained. If someone refuses, the pocket money can be reduced.

The transition to payment cards is progressing
Speaking of pocket money: the payment card model is also being expanded. State delivery facilities in Steyr, Upper Austria, are now also affected. As reported, this model has been in use in Lower Austria since the beginning of June and recently in Upper Austria. The “Social Card” replaces the issuing of cash to asylum seekers – but cash withdrawals up to a certain amount are still possible. This is intended to prevent the misuse of aid funds, including foreign transfers.
