Shift to the right in Italy – Giorgia Meloni: The woman for whom Europe trembles

Date:

Right-wing opposition politician Giorgia Meloni would have the best chances in Italy’s September 25 elections. How the 45-year-old mother worked her way from waitress to ‘Italy and Italians First’ campaigner with sharp announcements.

“I’m Giorgia. A wife, mother and Christian. And nobody can take that from me,” the icon of the right Italian broke out at a party event in 2019. Thanks to a remix of two Milanese artists with a disco beat, the speech became an internet hit – and she inadvertently became a pop star. What was planned as a mockery ends in triumph. The 45-year-old turns the tables and uses the song for her own PR: as the title of her biography “Io sono Giorgia” (translated: I am Giorgia) .

Betting Against Immigration and Gender Madness
According to her reputation, the strategist now wants to save her country. As the head and founder of the post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia (FdI, Brothers of Italy), she plans an arch-conservative Donald Trump-style reform: “Italy and Italians first”. In plain language: A strict limit on immigration and “No” to abortion, surrogacy and gender politics. In the field of foreign policy, Meloni surprises with a distance from Russian President Vladimir Putin. It supports Ukraine, including with weapons (unlike its right-wing allies Lega and Forza Italia).

The EU must dress warmly: Meloni dreams of a narrow gauge Europe as a ‘community of peoples and patriots’ – modeled on Marine Le Pen. The Italian version wants to clean up both Brussels and Rome. Meloni, a critic of the opposition bench to the government of Mario Draghi (74), is most likely to become his successor. You can see all surveys up front.

Distance sounds different: Benito Mussolini a ‘complex personality’
The tough blonde would become Italy’s first female prime minister and a dam burst. Her victory would mark the first right-wing government after World War II. 100 years after fascist dictator Benito Mussolini came to power, a post-fascist woman is said to be marching to Rome.

Her “distance” sounds like this: Mussolini is a “complex personality that must be seen in the historical context”. The “Roman salute” can be seen time and again at FdI events, similar to the Hitler salute. The party nominated a granddaughter of Mussolini in the municipal elections in Rome and a great-grandson of Mussolini in the European elections.

A woman steals the show from two men in macho country Italy
Meloni deceived critics and allies alike: she wrested a promise from her allies, Lega boss Matteo Salvini (49) and ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (85). President Sergio Mattarella nominates the candidate for the office of prime minister who receives the most votes in the election. Or the candidate.

After a breather with Draghi, the signs in the general political climate in Italy are stormy. Pope Francis called on activists to moderate. The country changes governments like underwear. Machos set the tone in the political arena. Now Meloni is stealing the show from her two mentors. Berlusconi removed the FdI from the political sidelines and made Meloni 2008 Minister of Youth and Sports. At 31, she was the youngest member of the government. Foster father Berlusconi full of praise: “It gives the law a new perspective.”

Between Fred Flintstone and a lot of ambition
The daughter of a Sicilian mother and a Sardinian mother, Meloni grew up in Rome: of all places in the left Garbatella district. She is involved in the “Youth Front” of the neo-fascist party MSI. As a student, she started a protest movement against the school reform initiated by Christian Democrat Education Minister Rosa Russo Iervolini. It bears the name “Gli Antenati”, in German: the ancestors, but also the Italian name of the animated series “Flintstones”.

In terms of ambition, Meloni easily overtakes Fred’s easy stone age: as vice-chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, member of the working committee, social committee and the parliamentary inquiry committee of the banking and financial system. In 2016 she ran (unsuccessfully) for mayor of Rome. Meloni has been chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists (EKR) party since September 2020.

“Mister Meloni” threatens the women’s program
She also knows the rigors of the level: in 1996 Meloni graduated from a hotel management school including language training. She works as a waitress. Disco barmaid. Nanny in the household of presenter Rosario Fiorello. And reporter. Behind the scenes of Berlusconi’s TV company Mediaset, it crackles: Meloni finds her lover in television writer Andrea Giambruno, 41. It sparks on the first date: “An evening in a great Milanese restaurant. She wore a black knee-length dress, dark boots and a leather jacket.”

Although he is considered “Mr. Meloni”, is the father of her daughter Ginevra (5) and lives in a house with the politician, the two are unmarried. A career as “First Husband” in the women’s program still threatens him.
