Waldbrand raged – Grand Canyon National Park closed until October

Date:

On Friday a forest fire spread on the northern edge of the Grand Canyon. More than 500 visitors and employees of the National Park had to be brought to safety. It has now been announced that the Sun -decorated North Rime remained closed until 15 October.

The park administration in the US state of Arizona said Monday (local time). However, the popular southern edge remains accessible. The fire was activated by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm on July 4. Dryness and unpredictable wind ensured that the flames spread quickly and made the work of the fire brigade. On Monday there was still a thick cloud of smoke over the gap.

The fire destroyed about 50 to 80 buildings on the northern edge, including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, where visitors could spend the night. The lodge had already been rebuilt after a fire in the 1930s and was classified in 1987 as a historic monument.

Governor calls for an investigation
The American federal authorities had abused the forest fire for no more than a week ago, but tried to let it burn in a controlled way and prevent the spread. The Governor of Arizona, Katie Hobbs, now criticized this approach and demanded an independent investigation. “The people in Arizona deserve why this fire could destroy the Grand Canyon National Park,” she wrote on the X.

The Grand Canyon is known for red sandstone, different rotes and deep gorges. In the Western United States, more than a hundred bush and forest fires are currently furious, about half of them are still out of hand.
