Shock in Niederthalheim, Upper Austria! An 18-month-old boy fell out of the window of a single-family home in a brief, unnoticed moment on Monday morning. The toddler was seriously injured in the incident and had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter.
The warm summer temperatures on Monday apparently convinced a mother of two in Niederthalheim to leave a first-floor window open for ventilation.
At the time, the woman was in the single-family home with her 18-month-old son and a baby. Around 8:40 a.m., the woman was probably distracted for a moment.
The boy seems to have used this unnoticed moment to climb over a bench onto the windowsill. There he lost his balance and fell about four meters onto the asphalt. He suffered serious injuries in the collision.
Mother provided first aid
The mother became alert, provided first aid and raised the alarm via the emergency call. Rescue workers arrived quickly and treated the injured child. He was flown to MedCampus IV of the Kepler University Hospital Linz, where he is receiving medical care.
