A massacre took place during a religious celebration at a mosque in Oman. Previously unknown gunmen opened fire on worshippers near the church. At least four people were killed and many more were injured.
The attack took place early Tuesday morning in Wadi al-Kabir, a suburb of the capital Muscat. The background to the crime is still completely unclear. The attackers have not yet been identified.

Eyewitness images that have spread on various social media show chaotic scenes in front of the Shiite mosque. Injured people are fleeing. According to the security forces, “several people were injured”. “All necessary measures” were being taken to track down the perpetrators as soon as possible.
The US Embassy in Oman has issued a security alert to its own citizens, asking them to “be vigilant, monitor local news, and follow instructions from authorities.”
