The Secret Service and local security forces failed completely in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump! The biggest criticism is that the roof in the immediate vicinity of the ex-American president was not secured. Now it turns out that the chain of errors goes much deeper.
By the time Thomas Matthew Crooks climbed onto the roof of the campaign rally, the Secret Service had apparently already registered the shooter. A local police officer told CBS that three Security Service snipers were positioned in the building from which the shots were fired.
One of the officers in the building saw Thomas Matthew Crooks looking out the window at the roof, looking at the building, then disappearing. According to CBS, the assailant returned, sat down, and looked at his cell phone.
Agent photographed killers
At that moment one of the snipers took a picture of him. The thugs pulled out a rangefinder and the sniper radioed the command post. The thugs disappeared again and returned a third time with a backpack.
The snipers reported that the 20-year-old was carrying a backpack and walking toward the back of the building.
A woman shouted to emergency services: “He’s over there. On the roof!”
Around the same time, attendees of the event became aware of Crooks (see tweet above). Officers believe he may have used an air conditioner to get onto the roof.
When reinforcements arrived, the gunman had already scaled the building and was above and behind the snipers inside, the small town police officer continued. As krone.at previously reported, a local official tried to climb onto the roof. But retreated when it became clear that Crooks was armed.
The Rifle Building was located outside the Secret Service’s security area, where visitors had to pass through a metal detector before entering.
An analysis of the publicly available videos shows that the participants of the first event drew attention to the killer about two minutes before the first shot was fired. The police officer’s description now shows that the secret service had registered the killer earlier, but had completely misjudged the situation.
According to CBS, federal law enforcement also rushed to the scene based on the radio reports, but by then a Secret Service sniper had already killed Crooks. The 20-year-old was taken out by the southern team on the rooftops behind Trump (see image above). The northern snipers’ view was blocked by a tree.
The biggest questions remain: What went wrong in the communication? Why was Trump allowed to continue speaking, even though Crooks was identified as a potential threat?
Air for Secret Service is getting thinner
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle acknowledged mistakes at the Trump meeting but ruled out resignation. “I am the director of the Secret Service, and my job is to make sure that we investigate and provide our people with the resources they need.” The intelligence chief described the assassination attempt as “unacceptable.”
US President Joe Biden has ordered an independent investigation into the incident. Your office is aware of the importance of Biden’s ordered review and will “fully participate in it,” Cheatle explained, sounding different immediately after Trump’s narrow survival.
Cheatle praised her officers’ response
The head of the Secret Service sent a memo to her agents on Sunday praising their response to the shooting: “The Secret Service acted quickly in this situation and neutralized the threat.”
