Shortly before the turn of the year, according to the Polish Border Guard, the number of entries into Ukraine exceeded the number of exits. On Thursday, about 31,000 people from Poland entered the country devastated by the Russian war of aggression, the authority announced on Twitter on Friday. In the same period, 27,200 departures were counted.
“Many return to Ukraine before the turn of the year and the Orthodox holidays,” said a spokeswoman for the border guards of the German news agency. Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on January 7.
8.8 million have departed through Poland since the start of the war
Since the beginning of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine on February 24, Polish border guards have counted nearly 8.8 million people who have left the neighboring country to the east. The number of entries was nearly seven million. This information concerns border traffic and does not allow direct conclusions about the number of war refugees.
Many are without electricity and heating during the holidays
According to the government in Warsaw in November, about 1.3 million refugees from Ukraine live in the country. Poland and Ukraine are connected by a border more than 500 kilometers long. As a result of the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine, the people there in many places endure sub-zero temperatures without electricity, heating, water and sewerage.
