At the end of May, a 41-year-old attacked a young police officer with a knife on Keplerplatz in Vienna. According to medical reports, he only survived thanks to a stab protection vest. The Vienna public prosecutor’s office is now accusing the Jordaan of attempted murder. Who probably wanted to die at the hands of officials…
Once again, the no-gun zone around Reumannplatz and Keplerplatz was the scene of an attempted murder: on May 24, a 41-year-old attacked a young police officer. Only his stab protection vest saved the officer’s life, it was said.
Protective vest saves police officers’ lives
The Vienna prosecutor’s office has now filed charges against Mohammed Ismail R. for attempted murder. “A medical expert report shows that the nature of the murder weapon and the type of attack would have resulted in fatal or at least life-threatening injuries without the police officer’s protective vest,” the prosecutor said in a statement.
Parts of Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten have been under a no-weapons zone since the end of March. The suspect appeared to the side behind an officer who was conducting a check. Suddenly, the dark-haired man lunged and stabbed with full force. The attack was filmed from a police van.
“Suicide by police officer”
In his first interrogation, the Jordaan eventually reveals that he wanted to commit ‘suicide by police officer’ – that is, he wanted to be killed by police officers after the attack. The charge is not yet legally binding. A trial date for the 41-year-old has therefore yet to be set. If convicted, he could face a life sentence.
Focus on Vienna’s favorites
The stabbing attack on the 24-year-old police officer is one of many violent acts that have shaken Vienna’s favorites in just a few weeks. On March 17, there were two stabbings at the same time: a 28-year-old allegedly stabbed a complete stranger on Favoritenstrasse. At the Reumannplatz metro station, a 19-year-old Syrian allegedly attacked a young Viennese with a stiletto – his trial began on July 11. Also in March, a dispute on Reumannplatz escalated, with a 32-year-old man being stabbed deeply in the thigh.
