After criticism of his self-proclaimed peacekeeping missions, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called on the EU to mediate between Ukraine and Russia itself. US presidential candidate Donald Trump would do so “immediately” if elected.
Orbán’s conversation with Trump is also controversial among the EU leadership (see video above). In any case, Orbán wrote in a letter to EU Council President Charles Michel that he would be ready to act “immediately” as a peace broker in the war between Russia and Ukraine if he were elected in November. His plans are “detailed and well-founded.”
He considers an election of the American presidential candidate likely. This would mean a great financial burden for the EU in supporting the country at war. The background is the assumption that Trump would stop American aid to the Ukrainian government. The Hungarian prime minister is one of the biggest critics of arms supplies within the EU.
Copy of “Pro-War Policy”
Orbán accused the EU of merely copying the “pro-war policy” of the current US administration. “In the current situation, we can (only) find an opportunity with a strong moral and rational basis to open a new chapter in our politics.” So the politician proposes to talk to the Chinese government about a peace conference, and to expand these contacts with Russia again. Communication should also be established with the countries of the southern hemisphere.
The national-conservative politician is largely isolated among the EU’s 27 governments. He is said to have close ties not only to Trump, but also to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Only Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico openly shares the scepticism about arms supplies to Ukraine.
