Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is cautious about U.S. support for Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack. “I think Taiwan should pay us for defense,” the 78-year-old told Bloomberg Businessweek.
“We are nothing more than an insurer. “Taiwan gives us nothing,” the former US president said when asked if he would defend Taiwan against China. China could simply attack Taiwan.
Trump on Xi: “Very good friend!”
“But China doesn’t want to do that because they don’t want to lose all these chip factories,” the former US president said. “If I were them, I wouldn’t feel so confident right now, but remember: Taiwan took away our chip business, I mean, how stupid are we? “They took away our entire chip business,” the 78-year-old continued.
He described Chinese head of state Xi Jinping as a “very good friend.” That changed with the outbreak of the corona pandemic.
The fear of an invasion
The island republic of Taiwan, separated from China by only a strait, has had a democratic government for decades. However, Beijing considers Taiwan, with its 23 million inhabitants, as part of its territory. The area is often the scene of military demonstrations of power.
There are concerns that China could invade Taiwan as Russia invaded Ukraine. The United States is an ally of the democratic island republic.
According to the magazine, the interview took place on June 25 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida — about two and a half weeks before Trump’s assassination attempt at a campaign event in the US state of Pennsylvania.
