Thirty years after the murder of a college student and the rape of his sister, a 57-year-old man was executed in Florida. Loran Cole was given a lethal injection at Raiford State Prison.
The Supreme Court this afternoon denied Cole’s request to suspend the death penalty on health grounds.
Woman tied to tree
Cole was sentenced to death in December 1995 after a court found him guilty of murdering an 18-year-old college student in the Ocala National Forest in February 1994. The student was camping with his sister, who was raped by Cole. He had tied her to a tree, but she was able to free herself the next day. One of Cole’s accomplices was sentenced to life in prison.
The Supreme Court gave no reason to deny Cole’s request. The 57-year-old had argued that the lethal injection would “likely cause him unnecessary pain and suffering” because of his Parkinson’s disease.
Thirteen people have been executed in the United States so far this year. In 23 of the 50 states, the death penalty has been abolished, and in six other states the execution of death sentences has been permanently suspended.
