Fire alarm on Wednesday evening in Wattens (Innsbruck-Land district)! A cigarette is said to have caused a fire in the room of a resident of the retirement home. The home staff responded quickly and should have prevented worse.
Around 7 p.m., the alarm went off at the Wattens volunteer fire brigade. It is believed a fire broke out in a room of a resident of the nursing home. The smoke detector immediately went off. When the Florianis arrived, the fire was already extinguished. It was just a matter of venting.
The reason for the operation was probably a cigarette, as reported by FF commander Martin Schrott: “A woman smoked in the room and it started to burn. The nursing staff responded brilliantly, took the first steps and extinguished the fire.” Despite the prompt intervention of a member of staff, the elderly woman suffered burns and was taken to hospital by the rescue team, who had inhaled light smoke and was also treated by a doctor.
All well done
The commander attributes the fact that nothing more happened to the perfectly functioning rescue chain: “I must say that everyone acted in an exemplary manner and prevented worse. The smoke detector also went off immediately. The rescue chain between all organizations and the home staff worked perfectly.”
