Pregnant after cancer – a girl! Why this birth is a sensation

Date:

A Tyrolean patient gave birth to a daughter 15 years after ovarian tissue was removed for a cancer diagnosis, which was reinserted the year before. The Tiroler Kliniken spoke of a “pregnancy that is unique in Austria”.

At the time, it was still an experimental procedure to remove ovarian tissue. The woman suffered from cancer of the lymphatic system, which is often treated with a “very aggressive form of chemotherapy”. As a result, women are often unable to conceive.

Tissue was frozen for 15 years
Egg freezing is now a common procedure. But this takes time – two to three weeks to stimulate the production of eggs in the body. Patients diagnosed with “Hodgkin’s lymphoma” do not have this time. The aggressive cancerous disease progresses rapidly and requires immediate therapy. The said patient also suffered from “Hodgkin’s lymphoma”. For this reason, the doctors at the Innsbruck clinic decided 15 years ago to use a procedure that was relatively new at the time. Ovarian tissue was removed from the young woman and frozen.

According to the doctors at the Innsbruck clinic, the tissue contains egg cells and is responsible for hormone production.

“A Healthy Girl”
The Tyrolean patient finally recovered. Last year, just a few weeks after the transplant, she developed her own menstrual cycle and became pregnant naturally. “Now she has given birth to her first child: a healthy girl,” says the Tiroler Kliniken.

The pregnancy is the first in Austria where the method has been shown to work with frozen ovarian tissue. There are 200 documented cases worldwide.
