Readers of “Krone” already know: the Danube Bridge at Mautern in Lower Austria is being demolished. Although new construction is planned, a replacement crossing, as has been promised in recent years, will not be available during the work. The country is considering a ferry service.
The 130-year-old Danube Bridge between Mautern and Stein in the Krems district must be renovated, that is a fact. There are no alternatives, that is clear from the demands of the Federal Monuments Office and the UNESCO World Heritage. The country must bear the costs of the 98 million euros for the project itself. “There are many obstacles from the federal government, but there is no funding or support,” says the office of the responsible State Councillor for Transport, Udo Landbauer (FPÖ).
