Not only in Austria, but also in Germany, the corona figures are skyrocketing again despite higher temperatures. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 105,840 new cases within 24 hours on Tuesday. The seven-day incidence across Germany thus rises to 447.3 from 331.8 on the previous day. The number of patients in hospital intensive care is also increasing.
107 other people died in 24 hours in connection with the virus – raising the number of reported deaths in Germany to 139,914. The number of intensive care patients continued to rise from 611 on Sunday to 640 on Monday.
Third ommicron wave al
After the sharp drop in the number of corona cases in early summer, there are now signs of a third wave of variants of the omicron virus. According to the RKI, the rapidly spreading new variants are BA.4 and BA.5. “This suggests that these ommicron sublines should make up the bulk of the evidence within a few weeks,” says the weekly RKI report.
An increase in the number of infections and a renewed increase in the infection pressure among particularly vulnerable groups of people can be expected in the summer and not just in the autumn.
Vaccination protection is visibly declining
The EU Agency for Disease Prevention (ECDC) stated that BA.4 and BA.5 do not appear to pose a higher risk of serious disease than other ommicron forms. However, there is a risk that just an increase in the number of cases due to higher transmission rates will lead to higher numbers in clinics and deaths.
The renewed increase could also be facilitated by a slowly declining vaccination protection in the population.
Lauterbach asks to wear masks
In addition, there is also the more careless behavior of the population with more social contacts and less protective measures. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) issued a Twitter appeal to voluntarily wear a face mask indoors and secure a fourth vaccination.
The Stiko Permanent Vaccination Committee, on the other hand, continues to adhere to the advice of the second booster only for parts of the population.
