Opening of Parliament – King Charles declares war after the change of power

Date:

About two weeks after the change of government in Great Britain, King Charles III. solemnly opened Parliament. The monarch read out the government programme of the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer – and announced a whole series of legislative initiatives.

Accompanied by much pomp and circumstance surrounding the ceremony, Charles, proudly wearing a crown on his head, read out the promise of the new cabinet: namely, to govern in the service of the country.

“The legislative programme of my government will be mission-oriented and based on the principles of security, fairness and opportunity for all,” King Charles quoted from the programme, which includes more than 35 laws. “Stability will be the cornerstone of my government’s economic policy.” Because economic growth is the “fundamental mission”.

The standard of living has fallen significantly
Recently, dissatisfaction with the economic situation and the sometimes desolate state of public services has increased among large parts of the population. Starmer raised this issue during the election campaign and also promised a boost for the economy in the run-up to the opening of parliament. However, the British social democrat does not have much room to manoeuvre. The tax burden is higher than ever since the end of the Second World War, the net debt almost equals the annual economic output, the general standard of living has fallen and there is too little housing.

Starmer urged Britons to be patient. “Rebuilding our country will not happen overnight,” he explained of the key objectives of his manifesto for government. “The challenges we face require determined, patient work and serious decisions.”

After Brexit, people want a better relationship with the EU again
Labour wants to speed up planning processes for property projects and limit the possibility of objections to construction projects. In addition, the privatisation of the rail network, which was promoted in the 1990s by the then Conservative government, will be gradually reversed. After much disagreement over Brexit, the relationship with the EU must be improved and new cooperation on security must be sought.
