The Kremlin will likely think more of US vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance than Republican candidate Donald Trump. “We can only welcome this because it is exactly what is needed – and that is to stop blowing up Ukraine with weapons,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Vance.
He is advocating peace and an end to US military aid to Ukraine. He has heard that, Lavrov said. The close ally of the former US president voted in the Senate this spring against billions in aid to Ukraine. A few days before the outbreak of war, Vance said he did not care much about what happened to Ukraine.
Just over two years later, he wrote: “The Joe Biden administration has no viable plan for how the Ukrainians can win this war. The sooner Americans face this truth, the sooner we can resolve this mess and broker peace.”
Peskov: Trump doesn’t promise us much
The Russian Foreign Minister praised these statements. ‘The war will be over. We will look for solutions.’ Trump had repeatedly claimed that he could end the war within 24 hours. He has not yet explained how exactly he intends to do that.
The Kremlin does not expect much from Trump as president. “As for the relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump, nothing good was done for Russia under Trump,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday. “On the contrary, more and more restrictions were imposed.” The fact that there was at least some dialogue should be seen as positive.
