Epicenter in the desert – Northern Chile shaken by strong earthquake

A strong earthquake shook northern Chile on Thursday evening. There are no indications of serious damage or injuries so far, President Gabriel Boric wrote further

According to the Seismological Center (CSN), the center of the strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 was in a desert area about 20 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama. It happened around 22:00 local time.

According to authorities, there is no risk of a tsunami
The source of the quake was about 166 kilometers deep. According to the authorities in the South American Andean country, there was no danger of a tsunami. Local media reported minor landslides and power outages in the area.

Chile is a country that experiences violent earthquakes time and again. The entire west coast of the American double continent lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for its high seismic activity.

A major earthquake measuring 8.8 followed by a tsunami struck Chile in 2010, killing more than 500 people.
