Donald Trump has officially accepted his nomination as the Republican presidential candidate for the United States. “In four months, we will have an incredible victory,” he said on Thursday (local time) to cheers at the Republican Party Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He wanted to be “president for all of America, not half of America,” said Trump, who also spoke about the attempted assassination at a campaign rally on Saturday (see video above). “I knew right away that it was very serious that we were being attacked,” the 78-year-old said. But in a sense, he felt safe “because I had God on my side.” Trump also observed a moment of silence for the bystander who was killed at the campaign rally.
Exuberantly cheered by fans
“My hand was covered in blood, blood everywhere,” Trump said. If he had not looked to the side at the moment of the shot, he would not be alive, he insisted. “I am standing here before you, in this arena, only by the grace of Almighty God.” His supporters cheered him wildly. Trump announced that he would only speak in detail about the attack on him once. “You will not hear it from me a second time, because it is really too painful to tell.”
A gunman opened fire on Saturday, shortly before the start of the party conference, and shot Trump during a campaign event in the city of Butler, Pennsylvania. The assailant was killed by security forces. One attendee died and two others were wounded. Trump was injured in his right ear. He has since worn a white bandage there. The incident was an escalation in the already heated American election campaign.
Trump said he learned something new from the attack. “When something happens to the ears, they bleed more than any other part of the body,” doctors explained. “I asked, ‘Why is there so much blood?’”
Images of Trump with blood on his ear and some blood on his face – and a clenched fist – went viral after the attack. The 78-year-old said his supporters thought he had been assassinated. “I wanted to do something to let them know I was OK. I raised my right arm, looked at the thousands and thousands of people waiting breathlessly, and I started screaming, ‘Fight! Fight! Fight!’”
And further: “As my clenched fist rose high into the air, the crowd took notice and roared with pride in our country.” He had never heard anything like it before, Trump said.
