Request for withdrawal – Biden environment: “He is starting to come to terms with it”

Date:

Due to enormous pressure from his own party, US President Joe Biden apparently no longer categorically rules out dropping out of the race for a second term. The New York Times reported, citing several people close to the Democrat, that the 81-year-old appeared to gradually accept that he might have to give up his campaign.

He is “coming to terms with the idea that he may not be able to win in November and will have to drop out of the race to give in to the growing demands of many concerned members of his party,” the newspaper wrote. Biden, however, has not yet made a decision, the newspaper continued.

Calls for resignations have so far been rejected
Publicly, the president has so far vehemently rejected calls to withdraw from his own party. His campaign team has also insisted that Biden has no plans to give up. But recently, pressure on him within the party has increased dramatically.

An exit is only a matter of time. “I’m sure he’s actually doing some soul searching,” said one person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “He’s thinking about it very seriously.” Another Democratic insider said Biden, currently battling COVID-19, has recognized the signs of the times: “It feels like it’s a matter of … when, not if.”

“Exit is only a matter of time”
One of the people close to Biden told the New York Times that it would not be a surprise if Biden were to announce a withdrawal soon and nominate his replacement, Kamala Harris, to run for president in the November election. An exit is only a matter of time.

The Washington Post, citing three members of Congress, reported that Nancy Pelosi, Biden’s confidante and former Democratic leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, had told several party colleagues in the House that she believed Biden could be convinced to withdraw from the presidential race. She also has serious doubts that he can win the November election against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to questions.

Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Cedric Richmond, told MSNBC the reporting was false. The president said he was on the run. Quentin Fulks, another deputy campaign manager, had made similar comments earlier. The president is not undecided and has made up his mind, he said. Biden is on the run. The election campaign is moving forward.

Doubts about Biden’s mental state
Biden’s advanced age and doubts about his mental health have led to rebellion within the party. Since a disastrous performance in a televised duel with Trump in late June, several Democratic lawmakers have openly called for him to drop out of the presidential race. Many more have publicly expressed serious concerns about his electoral prospects.

Recently, prominent Democrats have also ventured out with similar requests to speak. And according to media reports, the party’s inner circle is now pushing behind the scenes for Biden to withdraw.

Due to a coronavirus infection, Biden is currently not making any public appearances. He has retreated to his private home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
