German police are concerned about thefts at the Flossenbürg and Dachau concentration camp monuments. The motive for the crimes is still unclear. However, it cannot be ruled out that the thieves were trophy collectors.
According to information, a dummy shower head and the door latch of a door to the former gas chamber were stolen from the Dachau concentration camp memorial site – the so-called Barrack X.
A sink holder and a chimney cap were stolen from the Flossenbürg concentration camp memorial. In addition, a memorial plaque for former prisoner Rudolf Nowak, who died in the camp in January 1945, was stolen, according to a spokeswoman for the Bavarian Memorial Foundation. In addition, historic granite slabs that had been stored for restoration were stolen from a sidewalk earlier this year.
The safety concept needs to be modernized
About ten years ago, unknown perpetrators dismantled and stole the gate in Dachau with the inscription “Arbeit macht frei”. More than two years later, the gate reappeared at the Norwegian coastal town of Bergen. An anonymous tip had previously been received about the location. The security concept in both former concentration camps must be revised and technically improved after the recent thefts.
The Dachau concentration camp was the first large, permanent Nazi concentration camp. Between 1933 and 1945, over 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned there and 41,500 died. The Flossenbürg concentration camp was liberated by the American army on 23 April 1945. Of the approximately 100,000 people imprisoned there or in its subcamps, approximately 30,000 died.
