The World Health Organization (WHO) convenes the emergency committee due to cases of monkey pox in many countries. The expert council decides whether – as with the coronavirus – it is a “health emergency of international concern” (PHEIC).
The rate at which the monkeypox virus has recently spread has been giving experts a headache for weeks – more than 1,600 cases have been detected around the world as of Tuesday. The WHO committee must now decide how to proceed with the virus.
EU orders vaccine doses
Meanwhile, the European Union has announced it is ordering 110,000 doses of monkeypox vaccine in light of the current virus outbreak. A corresponding agreement has been reached with Danish biotech company Bavarian Nordic, it said Tuesday. Delivery to the EU countries could take place from the end of June.
There are now four cases in Austria
Two other cases of smallpox have also occurred in Austria – according to the health ministry, a Viennese and a Lower Austrian have been affected, who are being treated at the Favoriten clinic in the federal capital, it said Monday.
Contacts for both patients are being questioned and all associated steps have been taken. There have been four known cases in Austria so far.
