The Semmeringtunnel on the Semmering Expressway (S6) in the Lower Austrian-Styrian border region was closed on Monday morning due to a truck fire. A total of nine fire brigades with 78 men were present. The flames were quickly extinguished.
According to Neunkirchen district commander Josef Huber, the driver of the heavy vehicle and an Asfinag employee were considered slightly injured. Both were taken to hospital.
Still blocked in the direction of Mürzzuschlag
Five fire brigades from Lower Austria and four from Styria were deployed. The flames were quickly brought under control. In the late morning, the tunnel towards Seebenstein was passable again. The closure in the direction of Mürzzuschlag will last “for some time” and into the afternoon, Huber predicted.
The woman had inhaled smoke fumes
Regarding the slightly injured Asfinag employee, Huber told APA that the woman may have inhaled smoke fumes. Rescue and cleanup operations were underway around noon. Equipment had to be secured and the truck burned down.
According to Marc Römer of the ÖAMTC, the accident site was between Maria Schutz (Neunkirchen district) and Spital am Semmering (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district). There was a kilometer-long traffic jam.
