What happened this weekend in Carinthia is a nightmare: On Sunday, a 55-year-old man started a hike from which he never expected to return.
In the morning hours of July 21, the 55-year-old started his hike: the man from the Spittal district wanted to hike from the Gößkarspeichersee to the summit of Winterleiten in the area of the Gießener Hütte in the municipality of Malta. He first hiked the Winterleitengrat towards the Zigmontspitze – that’s when the accident happened.
For reasons still unknown, he probably slipped or tripped on another peak. “He then fell about 150 meters into the eastern flank of the Winterleitengrat and fatally injured himself,” the police said.
The search had to be cancelled
Because the man did not come home at the agreed time, his family members filed a complaint. On Sunday afternoon, the police launched a search operation with two helicopters, but this had to be called off around midnight without result. On Monday morning, the search was resumed.
At around 9:00, the emergency services were able to find the hiker on the eastern slope of the Winterleitengrat – he had suffered a fatal accident. The Malta-Liesertal mountain rescue service, the Spittal an der Drau mountain rescue service, four search dogs from the Carinthia mountain rescue team, the Spittal an der Drau Alpine Police, the Salzburg police helicopter and the RK1 medical emergency helicopter were present.
