The US vice president did not mention her candidacy during her first public event and concentrated on praising the Democratic president’s legacy. Shortly after, Nancy Pelosi, one of the most influential politicians in the Democratic Party, expressed her support.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris participated in the U.S. Congress on Monday the first official act after the day before he filed for the White House post-President Joe Biden post, taking the opportunity to praise the legacy of the American president in his four years at the head of the country.

“Joe Biden’s legacy is unparalleled in modern history. In one term, he has surpassed the legacy of most two-term presidents,” the US vice president said during an event at the White House with college athletes.

“We are deeply grateful for his service to our nation,” he noted in his eulogy for the Democratic president.

Harris stressed that President Biden would have liked to attend the event, but that he is still recovering from his coronavirus infection. “He is feeling much better and is recovering quickly. He will be back on the road soon,” he added.

This is Harris’ first public appearance since Biden announced his resignation from his re-election bid on Sunday in a decision he defended as “in the best interests” of the Democratic Party, the country and his personal interests.

Shortly after, Harris confirmed in a message on X that Monday was her “first full day of campaigning.” “One day down. 105 to go. Together, we will win,” he added.

Pelosi publicly endorses Harris

Almost simultaneously, the Democratic candidate received the support of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the leaders who had so far remained silent and supported opening a mini-primary process.

In a statement, Pelosi announced her “enthusiastic support” for Harris. “It is with tremendous pride and boundless optimism about the future of our country that I offer my support to the Vice President. My enthusiastic support is official, personal and political,” the veteran politician said.

Pelosi’s support clears the way for Harris, though it’s not yet clear whether the entire party will back her.
