Bullfighting will be banned in Colombia in the future. President Gustavo Petro has signed a corresponding law. “We cannot tell the world that killing living and conscious beings for entertainment is culture,” he said.
If nature is destroyed, humanity will come to an end. In the future, the arena will be a stage for “culture, sports, life and not death.” The country now has three years to transform the arenas into cultural and art centers. The workers who earn their living from bullfighting must be retrained, Petro said.
At the end of May, the law “No más olé” (No more Olé) was passed. Bullfighting has been a tradition in the South American country since Spanish colonial times. Animal rights activists have repeatedly protested against it in recent years. Bullfighting is still legal in Spain, Portugal, France, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
