In Sicily, Europe’s largest active volcano, Etna, spewed huge amounts of glowing lava into the air on Tuesday night and into the morning. Explosions were seen and heard again and again.
A thick cloud of lava, magmatic gases and rock rose above the mountain, which was over 3,300 metres high, according to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
Ash also fell on several towns around Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, initially there were no reports of major damage. Operations continued at the airport of the city of Catania, near the volcano.
