The German Bundeswehr’s aviation service has flown government officials to the European Football Championship six times this year. Among them are Chancellor Olaf Scholz and cabinet members such as Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Health Minister Karl Lauterbach.
The missions cost around one hundred thousand euros each. The most expensive flight was from Berlin to Stuttgart and back for the Germany-Hungary match on 19 June, at 114,487.41 euros. In total, the government spent 531,000 euros, when the Defence Ministry responded to a question from a left-wing opposition. The Federal Chancellery has ordered four of the six flight connections.
Left: “Completely irresponsible or out of touch”
“Anyone who costs more than half a million euros for six alleged business trips is either completely irresponsible or completely unreachable,” criticized left-wing MP Sören Pellmann. The willingness to fly should not be “an alternative travel option for an evening entertainment program of the federal government.” At the same time, he pointed out that the alternative train had been eliminated.
The Ministry of Defence has stated in turn that the flight hours are included in the annual programme of the Bundeswehr. It is also about maintaining the licences. In other words: even without this deployment, costs and flight hours would have been necessary.
