NATO is strengthening its efforts in the Middle East and Africa with a special representative. The activities of terrorist organizations are seen as a threat from the region.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has selected Spaniard Javier Colomina for the post, the defense alliance announced in Brussels. He previously served as Assistant Secretary General for Security Policy and Stoltenberg’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The heads of state and government of the 32 alliance countries approved the strengthening of NATO’s efforts in the Middle East and Africa at the summit in Washington two weeks ago.
NATO wants to be the point of contact
The final declaration stated that the aim was to promote security and stability in the region through partnerships, thereby contributing to peace and prosperity. The new Special Representative should serve as NATO’s central point of contact for the region and coordinate efforts.
Concretely, it was also agreed to strengthen the Southern Coordination Centre in Naples and NATO’s regional representation in Kuwait, and to open a liaison office in the Jordanian capital Amman.
