The Mautern Danube Bridge, one of the most important river crossings in the Wachau, will be closed to traffic next year. How long the renovation will take is unclear, as is the exact start of construction. The only thing that is certain is that there will be no replacement bridge. The “Krone” has examined the project, the work on which has been dragging on for 18 (!) years. And he also came across suggestions for a ‘two-bridge solution’.
In fact, the aging structure should be worked on diligently, while traffic can flow unhindered from one bank to the other over a specially constructed replacement bridge. While the start of construction of the old crossing is still being postponed, State Councillor for Transport Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) recently rejected the new one.
The temporary crossing alone would cost 35 million euros. “And after three years it would have to be removed again,” says the politician. From this statement alone you can at least get an idea of the planned construction period. But: Why is it all taking so long?
