German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that he will run for chancellorship again. “As chancellor, I will run to become chancellor again,” the SPD politician said at the traditional summer press conference of German government leaders in Berlin. The next federal elections are scheduled for the autumn of 2025.
The SPD is a very closed party. “We are all determined to enter the next federal election campaign together and win.”
No role model Biden
Scholz was previously asked if he would follow the example of US President Joe Biden, who had announced that he would not run for president again. “Thank you for the extremely kind and friendly question,” Scholz said emphatically.
Parallel to Scholz’s statements, the German cabinet decided on a recommendation that the next federal elections should take place on September 28, 2025. In Germany, the final decision is made by the Federal President, but he usually follows the government’s recommendations.
Debates on election dates
According to the Federal Electoral Act, the election day must always be a Sunday or a holiday. There are fixed requirements for the date. According to Article 39, paragraph 1, of the Basic Law, the elections may not be held earlier than 46 and later than 48 months after the beginning of the parliamentary term.
There had been discussions about the date before, especially in Berlin, as the Berlin Marathon was originally scheduled to take place on September 28, 2025. The sporting event has now been moved forward one week to September 21.
