Wildfires raged in southern Italy on Wednesday. A large forest fire near the Apulian coastal town of Vieste prompted firefighters to evacuate a campsite and a holiday village where some 1,200 holidaymakers were staying on Wednesday.
Several tourists were taken by boat from the Bay of San Felice to a gym by the municipality of Vieste.
Fight the flames
Two Canadair planes and a firefighting helicopter were deployed along with firefighters on the ground to battle the flames, which were being pushed towards the holiday village by strong winds.
The mayor of Vieste described the situation in the Italian media as “critical”.
