A Dutchman called the mountain rescue emergency number because his older brother could not handle the difficulty of the via ferrata. Due to the cloud cover, helicopter operations were not possible. Seven men went to the holidaymakers, but did not accompany them into the valley, but to a hut.
Two Dutch brothers (45, 49) had a high mountain climb in mind late Tuesday morning when they set off from the Simonyhütte to the Hohen Kreuz. They wanted to descend from the summit via the so-called “Amon via ferrata” towards the Adamekhütte. They had planned the tour using a mobile phone app. Although this indicated a duration of four to five hours, this unfortunately did not reflect the difficulty of the climb.
No helicopter rescue possible
It happened as it had to happen: while the younger brother had no problems, the 49-year-old fell several times until he finally could not go any further at the most difficult point. So the younger man alerted the mountain rescue team at 19:50. Due to the low cloud cover, a rescue by helicopter was impossible – so seven men, five mountain rescuers and two alpine police officers were flown to the Adamekhütte, from where they climbed to the pair of brothers.
Had to be supported to the hut
The 45-year-old was able to complete the via ferrata independently, while the 49-year-old had to abseil about 60 meters from the Great Gosu Glacier. The exhausted man also had to be supported during the two-hour descent back to the Adamekhütte until they arrived there at 23:15. The rescue services left the valley early on Friday morning and the two brothers completed the last stretch to Gosau in pairs.
