The death toll after a highway collapsed in Naples has risen to three, with a 53-year-old woman dying in hospital from her injuries, authorities said Wednesday.
As reported, two people were killed and 13 others were injured in the collapse on Monday night (see video above). The fatalities included a 35-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, who was the father of a two-year-old girl. Doctors continued to fight for the lives of two girls, aged seven and four, on Wednesday.
800 families evacuated
The accident happened late Monday night in Scampia, one of the poorest neighborhoods of the southern Italian city. The collapsed gallery had served as a passage between the apartments. Since then, 800 families have been evacuated.
The building in question is part of the ensemble ‘The Sails’, which owes its name to its shape. A modernization plan for the dilapidated complex was presented in April and some of the buildings have already been demolished.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has since expressed her condolences to the families of the victims, and Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi has declared a day of mourning.
