After two more suspects (aged 19 and 34) were arrested in Vienna in connection with the violent orgies in Anton Kummerer Park and at the train station in Meidling, further details about the crime have now emerged.
The starting point of the whole thing was the night of July 6th in the Anton-Kummerer-Park in Brigittenau. Young men from Syria and Chechnya had gathered there at that time and attacked each other around 21:45 with wooden slats, pepper spray, knives and firearms, three people were injured.
One of them was an acquaintance of the 19-year-old who was wounded in the chest. The 19-year-old himself may have been hit in the thumb by a projectile fired by a Chechen with a firearm that bounced off the asphalt.
Knife drawn nearby
In order to take revenge, the 19-year-old and the 34-year-old are said to have come across a bar on Leipziger Platz immediately after the shooting, where several Chechens were staying at the time. The 19-year-old pulled out a knife and is said to have shouted that he would now chop off someone’s head in the name of Allah. He then allegedly attacked a Chechen, who fell to the ground during the violence. But he is said to have failed to stab the man.
Security camera in the restaurant
Thanks to images from the restaurant’s surveillance camera, the two Syrians were tracked down. They were investigated by the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department and the Federal Criminal Police.
The following night there was another fight between the rival groups in Brigittenau, and the night after that at Meidling train station four men were stabbed or beaten and seriously wounded.
Pretrial detention extended
Both suspects were remanded in custody on Friday. Court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn said there was a risk of crime and escape. A 29-year-old Chechen has been in custody for almost two weeks in connection with the shooting in Anton Kummerer Park. This was extended by another four weeks until August 22. He is said to have driven several compatriots to the crime scene in his BMW.
