Mortality rate increases by 28.5% and serious injuries by 45% in occupational accidents in the Basque Country

On the other hand, Basque employees, assisted by Fogasa, grew by 34.2% in the first half of the year.

In Euskadi, a total of 18 people died in an accident at work in the first six months of the year, which is 28.5% more than the 14 deaths in the same period last year. Likewise, the number of seriously injured people increased by 45%, to 116, compared to the 80 seriously injured last year. According to data from Osalan, 21,174 accidents at work with sick leave were reported to the CAV from January to June, which represents an increase of 7.6% compared to the same period last year, with 1,490 more accidents. These figures include both accidents during working hours and accidents that occurred ‘in itinere’, as well as recidivism.

The sector with the most accidents during the working day was the service sector (9,607 accidents), followed by industry (5,835 accidents), construction (2,163 accidents) and agriculture, livestock farming and fishing (304 victims).

On the other hand, the CAV recorded 871 new occupational diseases causing absenteeism in the first half of the year, which represents an increase of 1.4% compared to the diseases counted in the same period of 2023.

Fogasa benefits

A total of 1,826 Basque workers received benefits worth 13.2 million euros in the first six months of the year from the Salary Guarantee Fund (Fogasa), the body responsible for paying salaries and compensation to workers in bankrupt or insolvent companies, an increase of 34.2% in supported operators compared to the same period last year.
