The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) late Tuesday ordered the halt of the UK’s first flight to Rwanda carrying several deported migrants.
The court in Strasbourg has accepted the appeal of an asylum seeker of Iraqi nationality. The resolution states that the man “shall not be deported until the expiration of a period of three weeks after the final decision in the judicial review that takes place.”
This decision also affected the other six who would board the plane to Rwanda.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s deportation plan has sparked controversy in the UK and has led to Prince Charles’ rejection of the Anglican Church leadership.
After the frustrated departure of the first plane, Boris Johnson has threatened to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights.
